Going to count over the weekend! I think that your insight on having a number and not wanting to go over it might be something that will get stuck in my head as well. Thank you for sharing your experience 💚
I use an app, I have everything except underwear, socks and hiking clothes/kit logged and I’m at 93 items (including jewellery). I’m using it to get more use out of items, see which ones aren’t earning their space!
Would love to read something from you on the intersection between sustainability and that part of the conscious consumption movement which is all about no plastics/toxins etc in your life, including in our clothes. I always feel in such a bind about this, as somebody who only clocked the ramifications of consuming fast fashion 5 years ago (and then clocked how much of the stuff we have in our homes giving off microplastics a few years after that). I somehow feel that purging our homes of plastic items and clothes (some of which we may like/use/wear) only to dump them at charity shops or in the bin is not sustainable (knowing how much of the stuff at the charity shop ends up in landfills abroad, anyhow - it just feels like an individualistic way of facing the problem). I know you normally only talk about fair and sustainable fashion but if you have the capacity to write something on this topic I would definitely read it!
Should probs add * I mention this because you make a point in your instagram series of mentioning how fast fashion companies make toxic clothes or clothes made of fossil fuels!
Would love to hear more about your choice to use the word "Citizens" rather than consumers! I have been trying to be offline this week but I can't stop thinking about that phrase.
Hi! I think there are quite a few items in my wardrobe that I no longer wear/do not vibe with. I think I need to declutter, does anyone have any advice on how to do this sustainably?
taking responsibility to find them a new loving home is the best next step, as you want to keep them in circulation. you could get in touch with friends and family to see if they want anything, re-sell the items on a resale app (Vestiaire, Vinted, eBay, depop), or via a car-boot sale, swap shop etc. for anything that’s too tatty to wear, try up-cycling (cushion stuffing or cleaning rags etc)
Ooh I'm interested to count mine! I once did in 2018 and just looked it up and had 337 pieces, of which 50.5% was second hand. I bet that now I have more, but also a higher percentage of second hand..
I counted today and excelt a few things that are in the washing machine I've come to 364 pieces in total, of which 72% second hand or inherited, 22% once new bought, 6% handmade. Was a good way to go through everything and I now have I pile to go and one to see if they still fit
